The goal for STR design is "aspirational but not polarizing." Here are the proven color strategies: **Tier 1: Safe + Beautiful (works everywhere)** **Classic Neutral:** - Base: White or off-white walls (Benjamin Moore "Simply White" or "Cloud White") - Accents: Warm wood tones, black hardware, green plants - Pop: One accent color through pillows, throws, art (navy, sage green, or terracotta) - Why it works: Clean, bright, photographs beautifully, appeals to 95% of guests **Warm Neutral (trending 2024):** - Base: Warm white or greige walls ("Accessible Beige", "Swiss Coffee") - Accents: Camel leather, rattan, warm brass - Pop: Terracotta, rust, or warm sage - Why it works: Cozy without being dark, very Instagram-friendly **Tier 2: Strategic Bold (for differentiation)** **Moody/Dramatic:** - One accent wall: Dark navy, forest green, or charcoal ("Hale Navy", "Newburg Green") - Rest: White or cream - Accents: Gold hardware, rich wood tones - Why it works: Unique listing photos that stand out in search results - Risk: Smaller spaces can feel dark (best for rooms with natural light) **Coastal:** - Base: White - Accents: Light blue, sandy beige, driftwood - Pop: Navy stripe pillows, rope details - Why it works: Timeless for beach/coastal properties - Avoid: Going too themed/cheesy (no "Live, Laugh, Beach" signs) **What to AVOID:** - ❌ Grey + grey + grey (the 2016-2020 trend is dated now) - ❌ All-white everything (feels sterile, not warm) - ❌ Bold patterns on large surfaces (wallpaper accent walls are OK, patterned couches are risky) - ❌ Personal taste extremes (neon, black walls, ultra-themed rooms) **The photography rule:** Warm tones photograph better than cool tones. Warm white > cool white. Warm wood > cool grey. If you're between two options, pick the warmer one.

Interior designer who also runs STRs here. The #1 mistake hosts make is going too safe. A completely neutral, beige property blends in with 1,000 other listings on Airbnb. Add ONE bold design element that makes your listing memorable and photographable: a statement light fixture, a colorful tile backsplash, a dramatic accent wall, a unique piece of art. This gives guests something to take photos of (free social media marketing) and makes your listing stick in people's minds during the comparison-shopping phase.
