Airbnb Categories are algorithmically assigned based on your listing details, location, and property type. You can't directly choose your category, but you can influence it: **How to get categorized correctly:** 1. **Property type setting:** Make sure your property type in Airbnb's settings matches reality. "Cabin," "Tiny home," "Treehouse," "Houseboat" — these directly trigger their respective categories. 2. **Location-based categories:** "Lakefront," "Beachfront," "Ski-in/Ski-out" require actual proximity. Airbnb uses map data. If you're within ~0.1 miles of a lake, you might qualify for "Lakefront." 1 mile away is too far for Lakefront but may qualify for "Near lake." 3. **Photos drive categorization:** If your hero photos show a lake view, lake access, or water features, it signals to the algorithm. Include lake/beach/mountain photos prominently. 4. **Description keywords:** Include natural keywords: "just steps from the lake," "wake up to lake views," "private dock access" — these feed the categorization algorithm. 5. **Amenities matter:** Selecting amenities like "lake access," "waterfront," "kayak," or "paddleboard" can push you into water-related categories. **If you're miscategorized:** Contact Airbnb Support and request a review. Provide evidence (photos showing lake proximity, Google Maps distance to water). They can manually override the category in some cases. **Appearing in multiple categories is possible** — your listing can show in "Countryside" AND "Near lake" simultaneously. Optimize for both.

Categories drove about 25% of my traffic last year, so it's worth optimizing for. The biggest opportunity is "Trending" — which Airbnb assigns to listings with rapidly increasing view and booking rates. To trigger "Trending": drop your price by 10-15% for a 2-week burst, update your listing (new photos, refreshed title), and actively promote your listing URL on social media. The surge in traffic + bookings can bump you into the Trending category which creates a snowball effect.
