I've used Schlage Encode on all 5 of my properties for 2+ years. My verdict: **absolutely worth the investment**. Here's why: - **Unique codes per guest.** I generate a code for each booking that only works during their stay dates + a 2-hour buffer. No more worrying about guests copying keys or sharing codes. - **Remote access.** If a guest gets locked out (they will sometimes enter the wrong code), I can unlock remotely from my phone. - **Auto-lock.** Door auto-locks after 30 seconds. No more "did the guest lock the door?" - **Activity log.** I can see every time the door locks/unlocks. Useful if you suspect unauthorized guests or early/late check-in. - **Battery life:** ~6 months on 4 AA batteries. I refresh them every 4 months preventively. Integration: it works with Hospitable (https://hospitable.com) and Guesty (https://guesty.com) to auto-generate and send unique codes to guests in their check-in message. Zero manual work. **Failure rate:** In 2 years and ~300 turnovers, I've had ONE lockout caused by a dead battery (my fault for not changing it). I now keep spare batteries in the lockbox on the property as backup.

I use the August smart lock retrofit on 2 properties. It installs OVER your existing deadbolt, so you keep your original key as backup. That's the killer feature for me — if the tech fails, there's always a physical key in a lockbox nearby. Pros: - Easy install (15 minutes, no drilling) - Auto-lock and unlock features - Works with Airbnb's guest access feature - Battery lasts ~4 months Cons: - WiFi bridge required for remote access (one more device) - Bluetooth range is limited - Slightly less reliable than the Schlage in my experience For budget-conscious hosts just starting out, the Igloohome smart lockbox ($150) is a great middle ground. It generates time-based PIN codes without needing WiFi at the property. Useful for remote cabins or properties without reliable internet.

I'll be the contrarian: I use a $30 KeySafe lockbox and I have zero plans to upgrade. My reasons: - Zero tech dependencies. No WiFi, no batteries, no apps, no Bluetooth. - Change the combo after every guest (takes 10 seconds) - If it breaks, $30 replacement - Guests always understand how a lockbox works (no "how do I use the smart lock?" messages) The lockbox is mounted behind a bush next to the front door. Combo goes in the check-in message and changes after checkout. Simple, reliable, cheap. For hosts with 1-2 properties in the same city, a lockbox is totally fine. Smart locks makes more sense when you scale to 5+ properties or host remotely.
