Website-first PMS for commission-free direct bookings

The quick verdict

For pure channel management on a budget, Smoobu wins: €17/month covers up to 5 listings with a unified inbox, stronger calendar sync (13/15 vs 11/15 in our rubric) and the easiest setup we’ve tested in this price class (9/10). Lodgify justifies its higher $30–70/month when the direct-booking website is the point — its builder, SEO tools and zero-commission booking engine are a class above Smoobu’s basic included site. Overall scores: Smoobu 77/100, Lodgify 76/100 — a genuine coin flip decided by your priority.

The full breakdown

7 dimensions that actually decide which tool fits, based on running both on real listings.

01Pricing & value for money

Winner: Smoobu

€17 for five listings is the best entry price in the PMS market.

Smoobu’s Starter plan is remarkable value: €17/month covers up to five listings with the channel manager, unified inbox, calendar sync and a basic direct booking site. Growth (€29) adds automation rules and analytics; Pro (€49) adds API access and priority support. No setup fees, no contracts — it scored 9/10 on value.

Lodgify also scored 9/10 on value but starts higher: $30/month for one rental (with a 2% payment fee that disappears on the $50 Professional plan). For a host with 3–5 listings, Smoobu can cost a third of Lodgify’s equivalent tier. What you’re paying Lodgify extra for is the website — which brings us to the next section.

Smoobu
  • €17/mo for up to 5 listings
  • Growth €29 · Pro €49
  • No setup fees or contracts
Lodgify
  • $30/mo Starter (1 rental)
  • $50 Professional waives payment fee
  • Zero booking commission

02Direct bookings & websites

Winner: Lodgify

Lodgify’s builder is the category benchmark; Smoobu’s site is a nice freebie.

Lodgify’s website builder — rental-optimised templates, real payment processing, built-in SEO and marketing tools, embeddable booking widget, custom domains — is the best in the PMS space, and every plan takes zero commission on direct bookings. If you’re serious about building an OTA-independent channel, this is the tool.

Smoobu includes a multi-language direct booking website with payment integration at no extra cost, which is honestly impressive at €17. But it’s a template site, not a builder: design control is limited, SEO tooling is thin, and it reads as “a page for your guests” rather than “your brand’s storefront”. A freebie versus a flagship.

03Ease of use & setup

Winner: Smoobu

Smoobu’s 9/10-and-9/10 is the friendliest onboarding in our PMS testing.

Smoobu scored 9/10 on both usability and setup — the cleanest, fastest onboarding we’ve tested at any price: connect channels, and the unified inbox and calendar just work. It’s the PMS we’d hand to a host who’s scared of software.

Lodgify (8/10 usability, 7/10 setup) is also friendly, but building a website you’re proud of takes real time, and some design customisation feels boxed in. Neither requires a sales call.

04Channel management & sync

Winner: Smoobu

Smoobu’s 13/15 sync beats Lodgify’s 11/15 — surprising at this price.

Smoobu punches above its price on sync: 13/15 in our rubric across Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo and Expedia, with quick conflict resolution and no double bookings in testing. Lodgify’s 11/15 covers the same majors dependably but showed more edge cases as calendars filled. For a budget tool to out-sync a pricier one is exactly the kind of detail that decides this tier.

05Automation & daily operations

It’s a tie

Both are light — 7/10 each. Neither replaces a real automation engine.

Both platforms scored 7/10 on automation, and both are honest about their limits. Smoobu’s Growth tier brings message and task automation rules that cover the basics; Lodgify handles automated messages and payment reminders. Neither offers AI answering, deep task orchestration or the event-based guest-journey automation of a Hospitable.

If automation is actually your priority, the answer isn’t either of these — it’s Hospitable, whose free plan undercuts both (see our Lodgify vs Hospitable comparison). Buy Smoobu or Lodgify for their strengths, not for automation.

06Analytics, accounting & extras

It’s a tie

Thin on both sides — budget tools with budget back offices.

Smoobu’s analytics arrive on the Growth tier and stay basic; accounting is limited and lock/accounting integrations can need manual setup. Lodgify’s reporting is similarly rudimentary, with owner statements gated to the $70 Ultimate tier. One shared bright spot: both export data cleanly (top marks in our portability testing), so neither traps you if you migrate someday. Either way, plan on a spreadsheet or bookkeeping tool alongside.

07Support & reliability

It’s a tie

Both 8/10 support and 8/10 reliability — no complaints, no heroics.

Both scored 8/10 on support — responsive email and chat in business hours, with priority handling on their top tiers (Smoobu Pro, Lodgify Ultimate). Reliability matched at 8/10; neither dropped a sync in our testing window. Smoobu’s support and interface are notably multilingual, a real plus for European hosts.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Smoobu if…

  • You have 2–5 listings and want the lowest total software cost in the market
  • You want the easiest setup and cleanest interface in the budget class
  • Channel sync quality matters more to you than website polish
  • You host in Europe — multi-language interface, site and support
  • You want no contracts and the freedom to leave anytime

Choose Lodgify if…

  • A professional direct-booking website is your growth plan
  • Built-in SEO and marketing tools matter to you
  • Zero commission on direct bookings fits your margin strategy
  • You want a custom domain and a site that reads as your brand
  • You’re happy paying ~2× Smoobu for the best builder in the category

The bottom line

This is the closest matchup in our PMS testing — Smoobu 77, Lodgify 76 — and the rare comparison where “it depends” is the honest verdict. Smoobu is the best pure budget channel manager we’ve tested: cheapest entry, easiest setup, and sync quality that embarrasses pricier tools. Lodgify is the best direct-booking website builder in the PMS space, and everything else it does is competent.

So ask one question: is your next milestone “stop managing calendars manually” or “start taking commission-free bookings on my own site”? The first answer is Smoobu, the second is Lodgify — and if the real answer is “automate my guest messaging”, skip both and start on Hospitable’s free plan.
